Inspiring Quote

This was Day 3 of Nursing Orientation, a mandatory program that every hospital requires its new nurses, no matter how seasoned, to sit through.  Today we were presented with an interesting quote from Dr. Martin Luther King and I thought how helpful it would be for me to apply this to my own profession.

"If a man is called to be a street sweeper, he should sweep streets even as a Michaelangelo painted, or Beethoven composed music or Shakespeare wrote poetry. He should sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will pause to say, 'Here lived a great street sweeper who did his job well."

  2. I love this quote! And I was delighted to read it tonight. I just got home from a funeral Mass for a long time acquaintance who was larger than life, with a big, outgoing personality and amazing sense of humor. She could be outrageous, but people loved her all the more for it. She had tons of friends and touched so many people's lives. She was always entertaining, etc. She headed up her parish RCIA program for 20 years.

I am so much the opposite. I often wonder what my purpose is. But as the quote reminds us so beautifully, I need to be the best me at every moment. I used to wish God had made me more outgoing, etc. But now I just want to be whatever pleases Him. And sometimes I dare to dream that those of us who are often overlooked by others, may be a bit more noticed by Him : )

And what could be more lovely than that!

  3. Julie, yes I agree, she was.

Patricia, sorry to hear about your friend. May she rest in peace in the company of the angels and saints. I wish I had been made more outgoing as well sometimes as social situations can be painful, but I am resigned to allowing God to use me however He pleases. And not complain too much about it when it's not to my liking!

  4. I like this too. I used to have it hanging up at work.

  5. Beautiful.

It also helps to remind me that there are seasons in our lives...a season to "just" be a mom...but be the best stay at home mom I can be. I figured out early on that one can't be the best mother and the best 3rd grade teacher during the same year. I'm ashamed to admit that some months my parenting suffered while other months my teaching...I have never regretted walking away from the classroom...but I will always regret walking away from my baby regardless of how great her daycare provider was.

My season of life right now (albeit at 42!) is to be stay-at-home mom to our 7, 4, and 1 year olds. In a matter of time, a blink perhaps?, I will be able to return to the classroom and touch other children's lives.

    Blessings,
    Valerie

  7. Sure thing Mindy. I know what it's like to be in nursing school with a little one at home. You will make it.
